  1. Lesson 8

  2. Chapter 5 with the practice of the Law. Matt. 5:20 describes the character of the Christian. Unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. How is that possible? (great theology here) Because Holy Spirit indwells the believer, my righteousness is that of Christ. It doesn t get more righteous than that. Chapter 5 is the heart of the Law, but chapter 6 now begins Matt. 5:20 is the key verse of the Sermon on the Mount and

  3. Beware of WHERE you practice your righteousness. Give to the poor: we have ALL been poor and in need at one time in our lives, or more. Remember the blessing of His provision If done before men, you have your reward in full. Temporal reward : Misthos a reward that appropriately compensates a particular decision (action). Of the reward God bestows. When giving is done the right way, in secret, heavenly Father, who SEES in secret because He is IN secret, will give the appropriate reward. Eternal.

  4. Acts 2 and 4 indwell believers. Acts 4:33 Acts 4:34 Acts 4:35 2 Cor. 8:1 the grace of God which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality. (Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea) Acts 2 and 4 Pentecost when Holy Spirit came to permanently Acts 4:33 Abundant grace was upon all Acts 4:34 Not a needy person among them Acts 4:35 There was accountability and order 2 Cor. 8:1- -2 2 Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you

  5. To whom are believers to give: the poor and other saints Galatians 6 and 1 Cor. 9 1 Cor. 9 tell us to give to those who proclaim Phil. 4:18 says our giving is a fragrant aroma of an offering 2 Cor. 2:15 says WE are the sweet fragrance of Christ which

  6. Matt. 6:5 the purpose of self-promotion . Reward: temporal Matt. 6:6 is IN secret, sees in secret, and rewards: eternal Matt. 6:7 for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. Contrast: Do not be like them! Matt. 6:9 How do WE not make the Lord s prayer Meaningless repetition ? Matt. 6:5 Hypocrites pray in public and on street corners for Matt. 6:6 Contrast: believers pray in secret to their Father who Matt. 6:7 Don t use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, Matt. 6:9 Pray in this way

  7. Begin with praise and worship directed to the Father Praise Him for seeing in secret, where you are, in your closet, praying to Him: don t apologize for what He sees: He sees Jesus Ps. 100, Exodus 33 and Prov. 18 His glory and His protection. John 1:12 Beginning with praise puts the focus on Him and who He is, His ability, not me and my wants/needs. Ps. 100, Exodus 33 and Prov. 18 give praise to His name, for John 1:12- -13 13 Salvation itself is in His name

  8. Your kingdom come: Acts and I Cor. is not. (might bring to mind your unsaved loved ones) Matt. 6:33 Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven : example when He was in the garden. Knowing God s Word and being indwelt by Holy Spirit are the only ways we can know His will. Your kingdom come : when Jesus comes as King of kings Acts and I Cor. Describe who is part of His kingdom and who Matt. 6:33 This is totally describing seeking His kingdom first Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven : Jesus was our

  9. Give us: earth. This is our petition and intercession for ourselves and others John 15:7 Remain : meno: something has established itself permanently within my soul, and always exerts its power in me. To be held or kept continually. James 4:3 Luke 11:5 Give us : ask for the Lord s will to further His kingdom on John 15:7 If you remain in me James 4:3 Talks about the heart of asking; the motive Luke 11:5- -10 10 Talks about persistence in the asking

  10. Forgive: doing God s will Matt. 6:15; I John 1:9, Prov. 28:13 Temptation : James 1:13 and the flesh is strong. Carried away : right place or draw aside out of the right way. Entice. Man, by lust, is lured from the safety of self-restraint, to sin, like a game is lured from its covert hiding place. I Cor. 10:13 Matt. 26:40 come into temptation. Jesus warned His sleeping disciples Forgive : If one is not willing to forgive, then that one is NOT Matt. 6:15; I John 1:9, Prov. 28:13 Temptation : prayers for protection and guidance James 1:13- -14 14 God does not tempt anyone, but humans are weak, Carried away : exelko - hunting term meaning to draw out of the I Cor. 10:13 We CAN endure, and we CAN overcome Matt. 26:40- -41 41 Keep watching and praying so that you do not

  11. For Yours is the kingdom Him for who He is. Our focus must be on Him, His will, His power, His coming kingdom, His glory and His name. Romans, Daniel and Revelation: because of His will they existed and were created. Your For Yours is the kingdom we end as we began; praising Romans, Daniel and Revelation: He created all things and Your will be done

  12. Hypocrites neglect their appearance so that they will be noticed when they fast. Reward: temporal Contrast: YOU anoint your head and wash your face Father, who sees in secret, is IN secret, will reward you: eternal reward Is. 58:3 Is. 58:6 the bands/straps of every yoke and let the oppressed go free. 2 Chron. 20:3 the enemy: He proclaimed a fast to seek the Lord Is. 58:3- -5 Is. 58:6 Fasting was to loose the bonds of wickedness, undo 5 Israel was fasting for themselves 2 Chron. 20:3 Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, was surrounded by

  13. Ezra protection Ps. 35 Daniel, Jonah, Joel, Zechariah, and Jesus mourning in connection with fasting. (mourning for what?) Acts 13 and 14 Barnabas out and before they chose elders for the church WHEN we give, pray and fast it is for the purpose of pleasing and obeying God first, bringing Him glory. Ezra speaks of fasting with seeking the Lord for guidance and Ps. 35 David fasts and mourns for his enemy! Daniel, Jonah, Joel, Zechariah, and Jesus all associate Acts 13 and 14 Fasting and prayer was done before they sent

  14. Prayer prepares us for the proper use of the answer. Wiersbe When reputation becomes more important than character, we have become hypocrites. Wiersbe I pray, fast, and give, ask and seek but my prayer request is not answered: Why??? I remain in Him. He is in me. I ve asked in His name ..check and check. So why isn t my prayer answered? Is Father, who sees in secret and is IN secret, rewarding me by NOT doing as I ask because it is NOT for my good and His glory?
