BRYCE: Age 23 2ndof three children (older brother and younger sister) Fascinated with EVERYTHING about Dr. Seuss; enjoys road trips; and loves books, pizza, and music Aged out of IDEA Services in June 2023; exploring employment Received the ID (CL) Waiver at age 11 Supported by the Fairfax/Falls Church CSB for Support Coordination Autism Spectrum Disorder and Moderate ID Hospitalized twice for exceptional behavior support needs BEFORE age 11
A FAMILYS CHOICE: KEY CONSIDERATIONS A FAMILY S CHOICE: KEY CONSIDERATIONS What services were/are most needed for Bryce to support the goal of keeping him safe across all community-based setting? DD Medicaid Waiver services that worked for our family DD Medicaid Waiver services that worked for our family: RESPITE (Agency and Consumer Directed) What services are needed for Bryce s caregivers/family to keep them safe (sane and connected)? Therapeutic Consultation (Agency Directed) In-home services (Agency Directed) Where are the services most needed? Where will they be provided? Personal Care Assistance (Consumer Directed) Congregate group home (Agency Directed) How will services promote growth, independence, and skill development skill development? Community Coaching (Agency Directed) How will services and providers build on Bryce s strengths and interests? Group Supported Employment (Agency Directed & in process)
NAVIGATING AGENCY-BASED VS. CONSUMER BASED Agency Agency- -Based to provide services) Based (hired agency that employs staff Consumer Directed Consumer Directed (individual and/or family directs services, including hiring staff) Easier and faster (for my family) to get started with services 1. Limited to these services: respite, personal care assistance, and private duty nursing (and service facilitation) 1. Offered choice of providers by the Support Coordinator 2. LOT of paperwork 2. Trials and errors 3. Requires an Employer of Record (ME) to recruit, hire and train staff specific to Bryce s needs; track time and approve timecards; 3. Pros: someone else finds the staff; someone else handles the scheduling and timecards; and someone else handles personnel issues 4. Pros: Family gets to direct care and services; hire staff; for Bryce, he was already familiar with the staff we selected to support him. CD Staff are more likely to tolerate targeted behaviors 4. Cons: went through a LOT of staff before we came across the perfect fit for Bryce and our family; welcomed a LOT of strangers into our home. 5. Cons: Family directs services and staff (can be time consuming) 5.
