Explore the DEFENSE NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION R&D Workshop on Applied Nuclear Data Activities (WANDA) focusing on safeguards programs and the importance of accurate nuclear data in characterization and quantification of special nuclear material. Learn about the challenges faced and the need for improved neutron yield data, fission yields, cross-sections, and more. Dive into the breakout sessions covering Destructive Analyses (DA), Nondestructive Analyses (NDA), and brainstorming sessions for prioritizing data needs in safeguard applications.

  1. DEFENSE NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION R&D Workshop on Applied Nuclear Data Activities (WANDA) Safeguards January 22-24, 2019 DNN R&D Program Manager: Dr. Chris Ramos Technical Advisor: Chris A. Pickett

  2. DEFENSE NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION R&D Nuclear Data Safeguards Overview Safeguards programs utilize many destructive and nondestructive measurement methods to characterize and quantify special nuclear material (SNM). The underlying codes (software) associated with these measurement methods are very reliant on the quality of nuclear data being utilized. In many cases (for the data being used today), the original source of this data and the associated uncertainties are unknown! Without this information; safeguards measurement methods are limited on how well they can quantify measurement uncertainty or on how well they can verify the diversion of nuclear material. 2

  3. DEFENSE NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION R&D Nuclear Data - Safeguards Knowledge of nuclear and atomic data can become the limiting factors in design and calibration of DA and NDA systems used in safeguards applications. Among the nuclear data that are very poorly known are the neutron yields from the (a, n) reaction in low Z nuclides Other nuclear data needs for Safeguards are: Fission yields Fission cross-sections (a,n) reaction data Delayed neutron yields Half-lives Accurate knowledge of Gamma ray energies and yields Etc. 3 3

  4. DEFENSE NUCLEAR NONPROLIFERATION R&D WANDA Breakout Session - Safeguards Safeguards Primer: Defining the Need - Chris Pickett Destructive Analyses (DA) Methods & Nuclear Data Needs - Brian Ticknor Nondestructive Analysis (NDA) Methods & Nuclear Data Needs - Stephen Croft/Andrea Favalli Brainstorming, Prioritizing, and Summarizing - All 4 4
