Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) Overview Project Description: Determine Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) NTP feasibility and affordability, with good cost and schedule confidence, prior to a decision to proceed with full scale development. Demonstrate the technology that enables the development of higher temperature, minimum erosion/fission product release fuel elements using LEU. Leverages government, industry and academic expertise. NTP Yellow and Red Elements Element Explanation of why Element is red or yellow What it will take to get to green (and to yellow for red risks) When you expect to get to Green Technical Continue to monitor the purification process and analysis verifying that the process is feasible. Have identified and actively investigating mitigation options that could be implemented including alternative LEU Cermet FE formulation that reduces or possibly eliminates reliance on purified W. September 30, 2017 Challenges with purified tungsten (W) work have resulted in elevating the risk to this task. Schedule Completion of 1mg W-184 @ 50% slipped from 4/14/17 (working due date) and beyond 5/15/17 (due date with margin) Completion of the milestone in FY17. September 30, 2017 3
