  11. STRATEGIESFOR IMPROVEMENT ACADEMIC: The use of Orton-Gillingham and Heggerty incorporated into our instructional practices. 12. ATHLETICSAND WELLNESS Healthy Choice Ambassadors: A club for 5th grade students, chaired by Physical Educator, Chris Atkins. This club designs healthy options for our students and caregivers. They have held Father Daughter dances, Game Nights, Laser Tag events, etc. The goal of the HCA group is to encourage our family to make healthier choices at school and at home. SJES created a student sensory room to be used as a calm down space or to give students a place to just relax and regroup. Anyone can utilize the sensory room throughout the day, as needed. Every class has a Calming Corner for students who just need a space to regroup and restart their time in the classroom. All students know about the use of the space and will utilize it as needed. Some items in the quiet corners: headphones, eye masks, fidgets, stuffed animals, etc. We have a social worker, Emily Cintron, who meets with our most at-risk students once a week. Our school counselor has social skills groups, lunch groups for relationship-building, and one-on-one counseling, as well as monthly counseling for each class. Two recesses per day for our students in K-2; students in grades 3-5 have one recess, at least 30 minutes. The use of our outdoor classroom with waterfall, benches, plants, awnings and tables for small group instruction, whole group use and overall aesthetics on our school grounds. Use of a school navigator for at-risk families/students. Morning meetings each day in every classroom to begin our day on the right foot Incorporating mindfulness and self-regulation techniques into our classrooms The Growth Mindset as a tool in our school

  13. FACILITIES Our request is for the entire blacktop area at the rear of the school to be paved completely, including the ramp areas at the entrance to the fifth-grade hallway. We have had several projects occurring at South Jefferson Elementary that have greatly impacted our play area/blacktop at the rear of the school. During inclement weather, our students utilize this space for recess and outdoor activities. There are many "trenched" areas that are uneven, some filled with gravel, etc. (due to the projects that have occurred over the last year). This poses a safety hazard for our students, with many of them falling or tripping over the uneven areas. As part of this repaving, we'd like to move one of our basketball poles/backboards (that is in the middle of the blacktop) and have it installed at the edge of the newly paved blacktop area instead.

  14. CHALLENGES Lack of available substitutes Students struggling with trauma who need intensive emotional support Residual effects from COVID---learning gaps, social-emotional concerns One interventionist attempting to meet the needs of approximately 60 students in reading and/or math (for intensive intervention).

  15. REQUESTSFOR SUPPORT 1. Long-term floating Substitute/Interventionist at SJES a. Two of our MAIN issues at SJES are the lack of available professional substitutes AND one interventionist trying to meet the needs of approximately 60 students. b. We would like to combine the two challenges into ONE solution with the hiring of a permanent substitute that can support intervention in math and reading when not needed as a substitute.
