  5. OFFICIAL The Skills of Lecturing (adapted from AMEE 22) Consider the knowledge of learners Specify purpose / outcomes and provide structure. Vagueness and loose structures not recommended. Preparation Openings Gain attention, establish rapport, provide framework for the lecture The key skill - create understanding. Be clear, generate interest and be persuasive. Be prepared, use openings, Audio- visual aids, and summarize. Explaining Tell the story of a patient / case - will increase imagination and deepen understanding Don't give too much detail Presenting info / narrating Varying student activity Needed to keep people awake - can improve learning and increase interest During the lecture and at the end - emphasize the key points, show links within the topic and between topics Summarizing ISN Academy 5

Choose Topic Write down whatever comes to you about the topic - facts, ideas, questions Free Associate Produce a rough structure, and create a title based on this. Specify objectives based on your structure Set out a structure Read for specific ideas and facts. Don't read too much. This can delay the main part of: Read Set out the lecture, AV aids, activities, etc. Check the order of subtopics. Prepare a summary sheet of the lecture. Set out the lecture Think of a good way of opening the lecture that will gain interest and provide the framework of the lecture Prepare the opening Rehearse privately. About 35 min in private is equivalent to 55 in the lecture. Give the lecture ISN Academy 7

First, let's outline the who gets preeclampsia... Statements that indicate the start and end of a subtopic important for complex topics that have many components So that ends the epidemiology of kidney disease. Let s now look at the complications... Frames Foci Statements that highlight the key points of an explanation So the main point is ; now this is really important Links Words or statements that link one part of an explanation to another You can see that pregnancy is affected by kidney disease, this carries over into post partum care as well...   11. OFFICIAL Tips for Interactive Lecturing 1. Set a question or problem to be discussed in small groups 2. Show a video with instructions on what to look for 3. Demonstrate a task with instructions on what to look for 4. Ask questions can also use polls / chat to encourage discussion 5. Ask students to frame questions in relation to data / make estimates 6. Solve a problem together (eg in breakout rooms) 7. Ask students to invent examples and compare them with another student 8. Ask students to consider pros and cons / strengths and weaknesses of a topic 9. Ask students to review the key points and to summarize what they have learned with their neighbors ISN Academy 11
