MPhil/PhD UPGRADE Timing 9-18 months (F/T) 15-30 months (P/T) Panel composition Minimum of 2 members of academic staff including: Subsidiary supervisor (Chair), and Member of staff internal or external to the Department, but not directly involved in the project NB: Panel members ineligible as examiners for PhD thesis
MPhil/PhD UPGRADE Guidelines for the student s upgrade report are as follows: A recommended length of ~10,000 words An introduction giving the background and context of the work (literature review) A research question and hypothesis A section on methodology A substantial piece of work towards the thesis objectives A plan and timetable for the remainder of the work A bibliography

THESIS COMMITTEE For all students starting after 1st September 2019 Panel composition: Subsidiary supervisor (CHAIR) One or two additional members Relevant academic experience Not from the same laboratory as student/supervisor Internal (incl. THESIS COMMITTEE TC1: 3 months (6 months P/T) Student: Panel: Preliminary research plan (~1000 words) Personal Development Plan Ethics Evaluation Form Upload to e-log (including agreed TC1-CL form) Discuss project plan TC1 Checklist (CHAIR) to panel, student, supervisor
THESIS COMMITTEE TC2: Pre-upgrade meeting: 9-12 months (15 months P/T) Student: Panel: Progress report (~1000 words) 15 20 minute presentation Personal Development Plan Upload to e-log (including agreed TC2-CL form) Review student progress and upgrade plan TC2 Checklist (CHAIR) to panel, student, supervisor
THESIS COMMITTEE TC3: Post-upgrade meeting: 6-12 months after upgrade (F/T P/T) Student: Panel: 15 20 minute presentation (incl. plan for next 6 months) Personal Development Plan Upload to e-log (including agreed TC3-CL form) Review upgrade recommendations and objectives TC3 Checklist (CHAIR) to panel, student, supervisor
THESIS COMMITTEE TC4: Thesis outline meeting: 30 months (48 months P/T) Student: Panel: Thesis outline 15 20 minute presentation (incl. plan for next 6 months) Personal Development Plan Upload to e-log (including agreed TC4-CL form) Review progress and thesis outline TC4 Checklist (CHAIR) to panel, student, supervisor
THESIS COMMITTEE COVID-19 Guidance Recommendation is: To hold TC meetings as and when possible To upload TC documents (e.g. TC Checklist) at appropriate times documenting progress or disruption thereof - use as formal evidence of disruption to progress Can be used as mitigation in the future e.g. Further CRS extension
RESEARCH DEGREES: EXAMINATION Examination Entry Done electronically ~4 months before submission of thesis Student will need to login to PORTICO and complete the online task in the My Studies section under the Research Student Administration container Entry will pass to the supervisor (signed off by DGT electronically) Student will receive email confirmation of entry and will be able to submit thesis thereafter
RESEARCH DEGREES: EXAMINATION Examiner Nomination Supervisor to complete the examiner nomination form Submit at least 4 months prior to the candidate s intended thesis submission date Candidate must have entered for the examination before the examiners can be approved To avoid delays, nominated examiners must meet the criteria specified in the form
RESEARCH DEGREES: EXAMINATION Internal examiner: Criteria Cannot examine more than 5 times for the same UCL Department/Division/Institution during the previous 3 years. Examiners from other University of London institutions are not counted as internal, unless also employed by UCL
RESEARCH DEGREES: EXAMINATION External examiner: Criteria Must come from outside the UCL community i.e. must not hold a UCL contract of employment or UCL honorary contract. At least 3 years must have elapsed between holding a UCL post and nomination. Cannot examine more than once for the same UCL Department/Division/Institute during the previous 12 months.
RESEARCH DEGREES: EXAMINATION Other criteria Research degree examiner experience: Experience of examining a UCL/UoL research degree. Research degrees examiner experience: Pairing less experienced with more experienced panel members. Supervisor declaration: Conflict of interest (professional, academic or personal) between either examiner and the principal or subsidiary supervisors (co-authored publications, large multi- author ventures, grants, working groups, co-supervisory roles).
RESEARCH DEGREES: EXAMINATION Viva arrangements Candidate submits e-thesis for dispatch to examiners Supervisor to arrange and confirm date, time and location Viva must not be arranged before formal appointment of examiners May take place at UCL or remotely Examiners should receive the thesis at least 6 weeks prior to the viva Student will record the viva via the Research Student Administration container in PORTICO (user guide available) Viva should take place within 3 months of the dispatch of the thesis
