Whats the sound? Whats the symbol? Visual Drill Protocol 1. Teacher shows the card with a letter or combination of letters. Vowel cards should be pink, consonant cards should be yellow. Student says the letter, then the sound that the letters represent. If the letter has more than one sound, then the student says the most frequent sound first, then the alternative sound. Simultaneously, student traces the letter on his or her desk. (optional) 2. 3. Option: teacher can choose to include an academic vocabulary word or image on the card/slide. Let s practice again!
Whats the sound? Whats the symbol? Auditory/Dictation drill protocol Protocol: 1. Teacher says the sound. 2. Students repeat the sound. 3. Students say the letters or combination of letters that represents the sound, e.g., /b/ is spelled with the letter b ; / / is spelled with the digraph sh . 4. Students write the spelling on paper. If a sound has more than one spelling, they write the most common first, followed by less frequent spellings.
