Manage Student Exam Expectations Students struggle with how to study content Likely due to energy/time distribution May be due to complexity What level of effort should students exert per objective per lecture (Blooms Taxonomy)? Objectives that match exam content and level of complexity (Blooms Taxonomy) Exam Structure Format of exam MCF, short answer, level of question complexity (Blooms Taxonomy) Sample questions Practice using testing software (ExamSoft, Respondus LockDown) Think-aloud protocols Unpacking and really understanding what is being asked of an exam question

  3. Manage Student Resource Expectations Resource Management - What resources do faculty support? Instructor provided practice questions (best option) Instructor approved practice questions (BRS, Lippincotts Q&A, etc.) Instructor provided videos aka microlectures (YouTube) Instructor approved videos (NinjaNerd?) Supplemental readings (minimal reading) Library services Tutoring services OASIS services Student counseling Resources listed in Canvas and/or syllabus

Manage Student Support Expectations Support with faculty check-ins (accountability for students) Email struggling students Reminding students of campus supports Outreach for appointments after exams Requesting reoccurring meetings depending on student needs Online booking for easier access to OASIS Program expectations and referrals when students are showing signs of trouble How does the program want to manage this? Early intervention shows better results than reactive intervention after a student has already failed

Manage Student Support Expectations Support Self-Care Promote open-door policy Students may struggle with content complexity Students may perform poorly due to non-academic factors (COVID, family concerns, etc.) Promote time management Students may manage family, work, pet(s), and school Refer to Academic Support early and often Not as punishment but framed as supporting neurodiversity Promote mental health with referrals to student counseling Promote the value of sleep Graduate students are estimated to sleep approximately 5-6 hours per night

Time Management Developing a sustainable study strategy/plan Refer to Academic Support early and often Not as punishment but framed as supporting neurodiversity We see students go between overstudying and understudying (cramming) Not using tutors throughout the semester Due to pandemic and online learning, students feel disconnected Zoomed out students feeling disconnected need strategies for reconnecting
