About Me Only 6.5 years in higher ed; 5 in international education Last position at a small, private, liberal arts university with only 50 international students (NO international scholars except Fulbrights) Currently oversee the International Students & Scholars office at UM
International Scholar: A Definition UM defines an international scholar as an individual who is not a U.S. citizen who comes to UM to perform research, teach, or participate in an academic internship through the J Exchange Visitor Program UM does sponsor H1B visas for employees, but typically these individuals begin on the J visa
U of M: J Visa Program Sponsor Since 2010, have sponsored an average of 130 exchange visitors per year. An average of 50 of these are considered international scholars Most visiting scholars come from China & India Almost all visiting scholars come from institutions or organizations that faculty have established relationships with
U of M: J Visa Program Sponsor Has the ability to sponsor J-1 & J-2 visas. Currently, the University of Montana sponsors the following J-1 categories: Professor Research Scholar Short-Term Scholar Specialist Student (including Student Interns)
Pre-Arrival Support Navigating the visa process Finding housing Life support (what to pack, how to get here, life in Montana) Health insurance coverage
Orientation Personalized to the individual Health insurance coverage Enrolling children in school Getting an SSN or Driver s License J-2 employment authorization
