History of Syphilis The disease Syphilis was first reported in 1494 It was believed to have come originally come with Columbus's sailors and spread through Europe after their voyage in 1492 The first that described it were soldiers involved in a war between France and Naples It was called the French disease or the Neoplolitan disease Fracas Toro named the disease in 1530, through a poem he wrote called Syphilis
What does Syphilis do? Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) can cause damage to your nervous systems, for example it can cause: Stroke Meningitis Hearing loss Visual problems Loss of pain and temperature sensations Sexual disfunction in men The infection can be in your body without causing symptoms, eventually damaging your nervous system.
The 3 stages of symptoms Primary stage: You will find sores on your body and they are painless and can also be open and wet there can be 1 or more found in the primary stage they can be found in the vulva, vagina, anus, penis and scrotum
The 3 stages of symptoms Secondary stage: after the primary stage the symptoms start to show but are still not that noticeable with rashes on your palms of your hands and or body parts. The rashes are not itchy but the flu may occur during this stage and you made endure hair loss in this stage
The 3 stages of symptoms Third stage: Still in this stage the symptoms are able to be hidden and people can go months or even years with this disease and it can lead to very serious health problems if not found early in the stages it can lead to blindness, tumours and can damage your nervous system Syphilis is curable but if not found in time it can cause permanent damage with damaging your brain or other organs
Have there been epidemics? Throughout its early years it spread quickly through many countries but 50-100 years later, the disease was much more controlled. However, its been increasingly on the rise since 2001 88,042 people have been affected by this disease since 2016 Its impossible to get a real estimate of how many people were affected since a lot of deaths were caused by syphilis years after they contracted the disease
How do you get the disease? Spreads through sexual intercourse A pregnant female can pass it on to her child Syphilis is most contagious during the second stage of infection Those who have unprotected sex, have sex with multiple partners or are homosexual men are more likely to get it than others homosexual men Fun Fact! About 80% of cases were How do you prevent from getting syphilis? By using a condom and practicing safe sex or abstinence
How can syphilis be treated? If syphilis is found in the early stages it can be easily cured with penicillin and antibiotics. After talking with your doctor, you can take a blood test to see if you have been infected with the disease. After treatment the disease will last up to 10-14 days.
