The Bible: Inspired Word of God
The Bible, as the inspired Word of God, is written by human authors who were guided by the Holy Spirit. Fully Alive 1 Year 8 Term One, Module One: The Bible Lesson 8: The Bible Is the Inspired Word of God
Learning Intentions In this lesson you will be learning: the meaning of the word inspired ; that the human authors of the Bible were ordinary people who were open to God s Spirit in their lives; that the Bible is the Inspired Word of God and is without error; that the Bible slowly reveals what God is like, which is known as Revelation. 2
The Bible is the Inspired Word of God The Bible is the Word of God spoken through the words of human writers. The Church teaches that the people who wrote the Bible were inspired by God to write as they did. This means that the Holy Spirit assisted them, so that they wrote faithfully and without error the truth that God wanted them to communicate to others about himself, about human beings and their place in God s plan, and about the world around them. The Church teaches: Inspiration is the word used to describe the gift of the Holy Spirit given to the human writers of the Bible, so that, using their talents and abilities, they wrote the truth that God wanted people to know for their salvation. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 137) 3
The Bible is without error The Church teaches us that the Bible is without error because the human authors were inspired by the Holy Spirit in what they wrote. This quality is called inerrancy. This does not mean that the human writers were like robots, writing only what they were told to write. They had their own ideas, and the influences of their time and culture came through in what they wrote. However, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, their words were also God s Word, conveying the truths we need to know for our salvation. The Church teaches: God inspired the human authors of the sacred books. To compose the sacred books, God chose certain men who, all the while he employed them in this task, made full use of their own faculties and powers so that, though he acted in them and by them, it was as true authors that they consigned to writing whatever he wanted written, and no more. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 106, quoting from Constitution on Divine Revelation, no. 11) 4
The human authors of the Bible The human authors of the Bible came from many different backgrounds. Some of them were well educated, others less so. Above all, they were ordinary people with their own particular points of view. They did not have the benefit of the knowledge we have today as a result of modern scientific discoveries, medical research, worldwide travel and so on, and so they were limited to the knowledge that was available to them in their time and culture. They were all people of faith. They wanted to teach others about God and about what God had done for them. While they could be mistaken about, for example, scientific, geographic or historical facts, the Holy Spirit guided them to write down accurately what God wanted them to reveal about himself and about his plan for humankind. God s Spirit filled them with knowledge and wisdom so that they could gradually reveal who God is, what God is like and what God desires for us. This is called Revelation. 5
A time to pray Sign of the Cross Teacher The Holy Spirit filled the writers of the Bible with knowledge and wisdom so that they could gradually reveal what God is like and what God desires for us. We too receive the gifts of wisdom and knowledge as well as other gifts from the Holy Spirit at our Confirmation. We thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit with us in our lives. All Thank you, God, for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Teacher Together let us say the Prayer to the Holy Spirit. All Holy Spirit, I want to do what is right. Help me. Holy Spirit, I want to live like Jesus. Guide me. Holy Spirit, I want to pray like Jesus. Teach me. Amen. Sign of the Cross 6
