What are the Biggest Challenges? INPUT THROUGHPUT OUTPUT Walk-ins EMS traffic Referrals Physical space Staffing Labs, imaging, etc. Consults Admitted patients waiting for a bed Process efficiencies Waiting for transport Lack of referral services (especially psychiatric) Process efficiencies
What are the Best Parts of the ED?
How Did Covid-19 Change Life in the ED? Reality that we work in an environment with very real dangers Made many re-think their career choices and settings in which they work Drove significant negative financial impacts on hospitals (related to high cost of operations during and post-Covid) resulting in layoffs, reductions of services, and hospital closures Created an awareness that despite disaster planning, most hospitals were no equipped to manage a public health event of this magnitude Increased the frequency of workplace violence Increase the volume of psychiatric patients presenting to the ED
