  1. Being an Engineer

  2. Types of Engineers Mechanical Generalist type, largely focused on mechanical systems. Petroleum Oil & Gas, Drilling, etc. Chemical Processing design for all types of chemicals. Electrical Hardware, software, controls. Civil Buildings, roads, bridges, etc.

  3. Being an Engineer Being an Engineer is a unique experience Most people revere you as a subject matter expert on everything, even though you re not. This is a similar experience to a doctor when it comes to health questions. If you can find a way to differentiate yourself, you can make extremely good money while finding your own special talents

  4. Best & Worst Aspects Best: Hobbies and personal interests can be tied to engineering, so you are constantly improving in some way Learning how important processes in the world actually work Income is good Worst: If you get into a field you do not like, it can be very boring/unfulfilling Everyone expects you to know the answer Not all engineers are the same, and communication is very difficult

  5. How to Become an Engineer Perseverance in school Grades do not actually translate to performance for most engineers which surprises a lot of people. I was a valedictorian at a small high school, but middle of the road performer at university. MUST GO TO COLLEGE The industry requires a degree for essentially any actual engineering job in today s world. Further, to become a Professional Engineer, you must have a degree. Similar to how a Doctor must have an MD to practice.

  6. Typical Day My current job is more managerial and strategic , so it isn t very accurate to an engineer. I will talk about when I was an engineer only. A typical engineer s day can include one or some of the following: General tasks processing Creative design Technical drawing creation Project management Peer review

  7. What Are You Learning Today for Tomorrow? General Problem Solving Time Management Functional Social Skills Project Coordination General Mathematics
