Year 5 Information School is currently opening from 8.40am until 8.50am. There will always be a member of staff on the door in the morning if there is anything you need. Home time is at 3.20pm. Children can walk home if they have permission on their collection form. PE is on Mondays and Fridays. Weather permitting, PE will be outdoors on a Monday and indoors on a Friday. Please ensure that your children come to school in their kit on these days. PPA cover is provided by Mrs Campbell (French) and Mrs Hutchinson (Geography).
Life in Year 5 From the beginning of Year 5, we will be ensuring that children are secure with Year 4 knowledge and skills and using these to build upon the Year 5 curriculum. Alongside the curriculum, we will also be encouraging the children to develop their resilience, independence and levels of responsibility expected of Upper KS2. Timetable the school day will mainly involve English and maths in the morning, and foundation subjects (art, RE, PE, history, geography, computing, DT, music, MFL and science) in the afternoons. We aim to provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum, to inspire the children and encourage enthusiasm in their learning.
Home-School Communication If there is anything you would like or need us to know please email the office (office@hempland.pmat.academy). They will get the message to us ASAP. If you feel you need to speak to us about something face to face, please catch us on the door after school.
Expectations in Year 5 Learning behaviours are underpinned by our four Hempland Values; Respect, Opportunity, Ambition and Resilience. Rewards - We have a Class Charter in each class that the children have written and agreed to together. When they meet the expectations of the Class Charter, they will earn themselves team points. Team points will continue to be used as rewards school-wide. Additionally, children will be given stickers to recognise they have shown our school values.
Homework in Year 5 Reading - at home for at least 4 separate times of 10/20 minutes per week. Please help your child by listening to them read when you can and signing their reading record weekly. They need to record each time they read in their reading record. Children are free to change their reading book once they have finished it. Spellings Practice regularly at home through Spelling Shed (weekly spellings). Timetables Regular timetable practice is also still useful in Year 5. They can access this on Maths Shed. Maths will be set each week on an activity sheet. Optional challenge sheet which can be taken by the children each week Homework grid on the school website with 6 additional optional tasks There will be a homework club on a lunchtime and we encourage the children to come to this if they are struggling to find the time at home or need some support with it.
Curriculum & Topics Our Autumn topic is Meet the Greeks where we will be learning all about the history and culture of the Ancient Greeks. Our curriculum subjects this half term are reading, writing, maths, science, history, geography, PE, PSHE, French, computing, art and music! Our texts this half term are Shadow of the Minotaur and lots of Greek myths!
E-Safety A large focus this half term, and this year, will be online safety. This will involve learning how to be responsible online, and the potential dangers and impacts of social media. We STRONGLY recommend that primary age children do not have access to apps such as TikTok, Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat etc. All of these have minimum ages in their terms and conditions because they know that these platforms are not suitable for the primary age range, due to potential dangers, and risks of children being exposed to unsuitable, upsetting or confusing materials.
E-Safety We are also very aware that children are exposed to these accounts, and many will already have them, and use them safely. We advise that you regularly monitor the children s use of apps such as WhatsApp, particularly the groups that they are part of. Also, we encourage children to be very open about things that they encounter online that they feel are wrong, and ensure they know who they can approach if they see something that makes them uncomfortable or upset. We regularly share guidance or advice through the Hempland School weekly newsletter. If you feel like you need some guidance, please get in touch and we can see if we can help. Over the last few years, we have discovered open communication between children, parents and school is essential to keeping the children safe and responsible digital citizens.
Experiences We are aiming to provide the children with a range of experiences linked to each topic throughout the year. These might include topic days, trips or visitors in school. Our residential will be to Bushcraft from the 19th 20thSeptember 2024. We will provide more information nearer the time.
