  9. Last Great Race on Earth The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race or as known, the "Last Great Race on Earth", is the most famous long-distance animal s sled race; a winter dog sport most popular in the Arctic regions of the United States, Canada, Russia, Greenland and some European countries. The race The Iditarod began in 1973 as an event to test the best sled dog mushers and teams but turned into a competitive race that is held annually in early March. The race starts from Anchorage to Nome, entirely within the US state of Alaska where the route consists of fierce mountains, frozen rivers, thick forests, and desolate tundra s. Around 12 to 16 dogs along with their musher form a team that should cover the race distance in 8-15 days or more and must reach the finish line with at least 5 dogs on the towline. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ministry of Education- Second Semester 2020-2021 English 3rd Inter- 8a.Fit for life

  10. Last Great Race on Earth The Mushers Mushers are the sled drivers who guide the dogs during the race. In order to win the race, a musher in each team has to be disciplined and skilful; and should have different strategies to survive the challenging route. In addition, he must have certain pieces of equipment, such as an arctic parka, an axe, snowshoes, and boots for each dog's feet to protect against cutting ice and hard packed snow injuries. The Dogs Sled dogs, which are highly trained, are used to pull a dog sled in the race. With its thick fur and strong legs, the Alaskan Husky dog is considered the perfect Sled dog. The reason behind this is that the Alaskan Husky dog was originally used to transport mail and goods all over Alaska before using the snowmobiles. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ministry of Education- Second Semester 2020-2021 English 3rd Inter- 8a.Fit for life
