AGING AND HEALTH WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MAJOR EFFECTS OF AGING, WHAT HEALTH CONCERNS DO THEY RISE?
INTRODUCTION TO AGING AND HEALTH What are the determinants of satisfaction in geriatric populations? Satisfaction would relate to healthy ageing and happiness with minimal physical and psychological ailments. What could be various determinants that influence health ageing? Preconceived notions about ageing, fears regarding old age, coping mechanisms could all be variables. Older adults identify that their quality of life is supported by social connections.
DETERMINANTS Four factors which directly influence the level of life satisfaction are physical health conditions, mental health conditions, social relationships and environment. Satisfaction would relate to healthy aging and happiness with minimal physical and psychological ailments. Negative variables include, poverty, a lower self reported health status, a decline in physical health, the ability to do household activities, depression, social withdraw. Healthy ageing and happiness with minimal physical and psychological ailments include, Preconceived notion about ageing, coping mechanisms. Being able to engage in meaningful social activities, social connections. SATISFACTION Activities that allow them to be useful to themselves and others, that are meaningful. Ones self reflection, what one chooses to focus on. Overall health, physical and mental play a key role in satisfaction, positive thoughts bring happiness, negative and expecting the worse bring illness and stress. What can be various determinates that influence health aging? Social determinants of health are social, economic, and environmental conditions that help older adults maintain their health and well-being. Adequate access to nutritious food, Stable employment and income Safe housing and reliable and affordable transportation. Education and literacy, childhood experiences, physical environments, access to health services.

FEARS REGARDING OLD AGE Older people are destined to fall Sleeping is a normal part of growing old Should old people stop driving at a certain age Difficulty performing task, such as: dressing, balancing a checkbook, cooking skills Not satisfied with life, or things they have done. COPING MECHANISMS Common coping strategies used by the elderly include: Active solitude, social contact, sad passivity. SOCIAL CONNECTIONS The key to healthy aging. Close connections and relationships live longer, cope better with health conditions, and experience less depression. Reduces stress in aging, less anxiety and depression Reduces physical health concerns. Positive cognitive health Improves physical health and emotional well being. CONCLUSION What are some of the major effects of aging, what health concerns do they rise? Aging and health is something everyone of us will experience in our lifetime. With concerns in regards to our health as we age we must accept complexity that comes with longevity. Developing a positive attitude towards growing older. Have the ability to exercise our mind to keep our cognitive skills awake, broaden our interest to continue to be socially active. Recognize and express gratitude. Take your health seriously by eating right and exercising. Aging with dignity is taking charge of how you want to age, let your voice be heard about your health care. Having dignity is the quality of being honorable, noble, excellent or worthy, a sense of self worth. As we have all heard the phrase Grow old with dignity take pride in your self.
