  2. What are the requirements to participate? Success in EMF requires math ability, reading ability, self-study, patience, perseverance, internal motivation, organization, and time management. To participate in the Broward County Public Schools EMF program, your child must: Complete EMF01-EMF03 prior to the start of school in August with a 90% or better average on Modules 01 and 02 and an 85% or higher on Module 03. Maintain EMF course grades of 80% or higher, and be no more than 14 days behind schedule. Students are expected to spend 30-40 minutes each school night, plus time at weekends and during vacations as necessary. After a warning, students have two weeks to catch up to schedule and/or improve their EMF grade to at least 80%, or face exit from the program. Students and parents must sign a contract acknowledging that they understand and agree to the requirements for participation.

  3. Why complete the summer EMF courses? Students are encouraged to complete the first three EMF courses during summer vacation. Reasons why it s a good idea: Qualify for EMF. You must score at least 90% on EMF01 and EMF02 and an 85% or higher on EMF03 to participate. You may ask up to 3 questions in the EMF Help Forum during course one, which may help you determine if the online EMF learning environment is a good fit for you. Exercise your brain! Especially if math has always been easy. Learn something new. EMF01 covers elementary group theory, which is used in quantum mechanics, particle physics, symmetry in chemistry, molecular systems in biology, and the Rubik s cube. EMF 02 is about integers and problem solving with these integers. EMF 03 covers sets, subsets and set operations, Venn Diagrams, and Pascals Formula. Decide if you want to learn more. This is almost certainly the first real mathematics course you will have ever done. It will help you discover if this is the kind of math you want to learn.

  4. How is EMF implemented in a school environment? At school, students study EMF within a GEM classroom on school-provided laptops. In addition to work in class, EMF students are expected to spend at least 30-40 minutes per school night. Parents should provide their child with a good pair of headphones. Depending on the teacher, EMF students within a classroom may be permitted to work collaboratively as long as they are quiet and do not share answers. EMF students may use the built-in EMF online chat forum to participate in local and global EMF student communities. Strict online behavior rules apply. Additionally, there are online tutors-EMF graduates that monitor this site and offer assistance. There is the option to post a question to the professors in the help forum. From time to time, students may gather in person for social and academic events.

  5. Grades EMF course grade: Weighted average of the assignments (60% weight) and tests (40% weight) EMF courses typically contain 8-10 assignments and 1-2 tests. Prepare well for tests in order to obtain a high EMF course grade! Students must pass each test with a raw score of 60% or they will need to retake the test until they reach this benchmark. Maximum curved score for this scenario is 80%. Official report card grade for Year One: Calculated using the EMF assignment and test scores for coursework scheduled for completion during the grading period. Slightly curved upward to reflect the fact that EMF courses are more challenging and demanding than the regular GEM course. Parents should monitor progress through: Weekly emailed progress reports, and Real-time online report cards accessed via student s EMF account.

  6. What role do parents play? Most important is to provide a supportive environment in which students can study without interruption or distraction. Help with your child's organization and time management. Plan for working ahead of or through weekends and vacations. Monitor grades and schedule through weekly emailed progress reports and online real-time report cards. Encourage child to ask questions in the online Help Forum. Reinforce that asking for help is a good thing. Even if you have a mathematics degree, parents should generally avoid providing direct help refraining from helping allows your child to develop strong independent study habits that he or she will certainly benefit from at university.
