Naming Molecular Compounds
Drill Name the following compounds: FeCl3 PbO
Agenda Molecular Naming Notes Practice Comparing Ionic and Molecular Naming
Naming Covalent Compounds Covalent compounds consist of 2 nonmetals
Prefixes Prefixes stand for the amount of atoms present
There are 2 steps to Naming Covalent Compounds
Step 1 Name the first non-metal NOTE: If there is only one atom present DO NOT use a prefix If there is more than one atom present then you must use the correct prefix
Examples of first element CO2 Carbon N2O5 Dinitrogen
Step 2 Name the second non-metal using the correct prefix and an ide ending The final o or a of a prefix is often dropped when the element begins with a vowel
Examples CO2 Carbon dioxide N2O5 Dinitrogen pentoxide
You Try. Cl2O
You Try Again CO PCl3 B6Si2
Carbon monoxide Phosphorus trichloride Hexaboron disilicide
Diatomic Molecules Molecules that are composed of only 2 atoms
